5 SPRING HIKES IN THE WORLD

 

Spring is the best moment to experience Nature in all its beauty.

Whether you plan a multi-day trip or a daily hiking, you can enjoy the awakening of the nature after the cold season, the new blooms and the warm weather to discover new places in the world; for this, we selected 5 hiking routes in the world to enjoy in Spring season.


1.      BROMO-TENGGER-SEMERU NATIONAL PARK

 

Location: Indonesia

The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is the largest volcanic area in East Java. It is a protected conservation area which includes the two volcanoes Bromo and Semeru and the Sand Sea Tengger; more, it is home of the Tengger community from centuries.

In the early morning, you can reach the viewpoint at Penanjakan Hill to enjoy the sunrise among the clouds and then discover the Sand Sea, a vast volcanic desert creating in the old Tengger caldera. If you are an adventure lover, a strenuous hiking will lead you to the summit of the two active volcanoes, Semeru and Bromo.

Mount Semeru, the highest mountain in Java (12,060 ft.) is famous for the great variety of flora and wildlife and the rugged terrains on its ridges. Mount Bromo (7,641 ft.) is instead the park’s most famous and accessible volcano; it is also considered an holy mountain by the locals.

 

2.      INCA TRAIL

 

Location: Perù

Even if you can reach the famed citadel of Machu Picchu in train as well, to arrive here by feet, through a trail of around 25 miles to be hiked in 4 days and 3 camping night, allows you to enjoy the varied surrounding landscapes and wilderness and also take a journey of discover into the history and ancient Inca culture.

The Inca Trail is the ancient track laid out by the Incas to connect the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu; a continuous up and down through three high-altitude mountain passes which runs along rivers and offers ever-changing views on the prairies and the surrounding mountains.

Along the trail, together with camping areas, you will find lakes and cross valleys and forests, but also the ruins of ancient Inca cities, of abandoned buildings, archeological sites and you will at the end arrive at Itipunku (“Sun Gate”), where you can admire the sunrise before to descend directly to Machu Picchu.

 

3.      TONGARIRO ALPINE CROSSING

 

Location: New Zealand

The Tongariro National Park is the New Zealand’s oldest park and UNESCO World Heritage site for natural and cultural importance, as well. This area is also well-known as some descents of “The Lord of the Rings” film was shot there and one of its main mountains is the famous Mount Mood.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a one-day trek which will lead you across a dramatic, awe-inspiring volcanic scenery; along the 12 miles trek you will pass over the multi-cratered active volcano Mount Tongariro and at the eastern base of the Mount Ngauruhoe.

You can climb the track in about seven hours in good conditions, but please note that the weather is unpredictable in the area. Along the way, you can also admire emerald-coloured lakes and with a long descent reach also to the not accessible Ketetahi Hot Springs, tainted with minerals and dissolved volcanic metals.

 

4.    TABLE MOUNTAIN

 

Location: South Africa

Table Mountain is a flat-topped mountain forming the dramatic backdrop to Cape Town and it is at the north point of the 30 miles sandstone mountain range of the Cape Peninsula, which ends at south at Cape of Good Hope. It is also home to a large array of mostly endemic fauna and flora.

The classic route to reach the summit of Table Mountain (at 3,563 ft) is Kasteelspoort, a 3,7 miles strenuous trek which in about 4,5 hours lead you trough secluded valleys and wild-sculpted rocks with views on the sea, but also in the mountain range and down the lenght of the peninsula.

The flat top of the mountain is often covered by orographic clouds; when a southern wind is pushed into colder air, the moisture condenses and forms the so-called "table cloth" of cloud.  According to the legend, it means that a smoking contest between the Devil and a local pirate called Van Hunks is in action.

 

5.    MOUNT PICO

 

Location: Azores

Mount Pico, located on Pico Island, is the highest peak in Portugal at 7,713 ft. and the third tallest volcano in the Atlantic. It is a dormant stratovolcano which requires physical and mental preparation for the ascent: a challenging and stunning experience, for sure.

Starting from the Casa da Montanha, at 3,937 ft., you can take approximately 6-8 hours to hike Pico and many suggest to begin climbing in the middle of the night or in early morning (if you opt for an overnight trip) to reach the summit in time for watching the sunrise from there.

If you decide for the Day Climb, you can hike through volcanic landscapes in the golden light and admire the breathtaking views from the top as the sun sets over the Atlantic and descend under a starlit sky to conclude the adventure with a magic experience.
